Surgical dermatology
Safe, scar-minimizing removal of epidermoid and pilar cysts — in-office procedure with same-day treatment and minimal downtime.
Smooth, round, movable bumps under the skin, usually with a central punctum (pore opening). Common on face, neck, trunk, and back. Filled with white, cheese-like keratin material.
Firm, smooth cysts on the scalp, often multiple. Arise from the outer root sheath of hair follicles. Run in families (autosomal dominant). Rarely, can undergo malignant transformation (proliferating pilar tumor).
Under local anesthesia, the dermatologist makes a small incision and removes the entire cyst wall. For infected cysts, drainage and a course of antibiotics may precede elective excision. Specimens are sent to pathology for confirmation.
Downtime: Minimal — most patients return to normal activities the same day with a bandage and sutures removed in 7–14 days.
