Skin Biopsy
A small in-office procedure that lets us diagnose skin lesions definitively — usually done in 5–10 minutes during your visit.

Why a biopsy?
When something looks atypical — an irregular mole, a non-healing sore, a new growth — the only way to know for sure is a biopsy. The pathologist examines the cells under a microscope and gives us a definitive diagnosis.
Types of biopsies we use
- Shave biopsy — for raised lesions; takes the surface layer.
- Punch biopsy — small circular tool that takes a deeper plug; good for inflammatory rashes and pigmented lesions.
- Excisional biopsy — full removal of small lesions when complete excision is most efficient.
Dr. Puyana picks the right technique based on what we're trying to learn.
After the biopsy
You'll go home with a small bandage and aftercare instructions. Most sites are healed within 1–3 weeks. Sutures (when needed) are removed at 7–14 days.
Getting your results
We call every patient with biopsy results — even when everything is normal. If treatment is needed, we'll lay out your options and timeline in plain English or Spanish.
