How Kybella works

Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into submental fat, it destroys the cell membrane of fat cells, which are then naturally cleared by the body over 4–6 weeks. The results are permanent — those cells are gone.

Who is a good candidate

  • Adults with moderate submental fullness ("double chin")
  • Bothered by the appearance but not ready for surgery
  • Realistic expectations — Kybella treats fat, not skin laxity. Significant loose skin may need surgical tightening.

What to expect

  • Each session: 20 injection sites, ~20–30 minutes total.
  • Swelling (up to golf-ball sized under the chin) peaks at 24–48 hours, resolves in 3–7 days.
  • Most patients are comfortable returning to work the same or next day.
  • Final results visible at 4–8 weeks after each session.
  • 2–4 sessions total for most patients.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kybella permanent?
Yes — once fat cells are destroyed, they cannot regenerate. However, significant weight gain can enlarge remaining fat cells in adjacent areas.
How much swelling should I expect?
Swelling under the chin is significant and expected — it peaks at 24–48 hours and resolves in 3–7 days. Most patients plan treatments before a weekend.
